One of the questions we’ve been asked since introducing South Vietnamese Patriots’ Day last year is a simple one:
“How should I celebrate it?”
The answer is that there is no single right way.
South Vietnamese Patriots’ Day is ultimately about remembrance, gratitude, and patriotism. Whether your observance is public or private, large or small, what matters most is taking a moment to remember the men and women who served South Vietnam, the families who sacrificed so much, and the enduring ideals of freedom that continue to inspire us today.
If you’re looking for ideas, here are a few meaningful ways to observe the day.
Remember
Spend some time learning about South Vietnam and the people who defended it.
Read about the Battle of An Lộc, the Easter Offensive of 1972, or another important chapter in South Vietnamese history. Learn about a soldier, pilot, statesman, or civilian whose courage made a difference.
If your parents or grandparents lived through those years, ask them to share their stories. Every family has a history worth preserving.
Pray
If you are a person of faith, consider saying a prayer for those who gave their lives for South Vietnam.
Pray for the soldiers who never returned home, the civilians who endured unimaginable hardship, the veterans who carried the burden of war, and the families who continue to remember them.
May their sacrifice never be forgotten.
Fly the Flag
Display the South Vietnamese flag with pride.
Whether you fly it outside your home, display it indoors, wear its colours, or share its image online, the flag remains a powerful symbol of the people, values, and sacrifices we remember on this day.
Light a Candle
Sometimes the simplest traditions are the most meaningful.
Light a candle in memory of those who fought for their country, those who never returned home, and those whose stories deserve to be remembered.
A single flame can represent gratitude that spans generations.
Observe a Moment of Silence
On July 7, take a moment of silence to remember the heroes of South Vietnam, those who sacrificed for their country, and the families whose lives were forever changed by war.
Think about the soldiers who stood their ground, the families who endured hardship, and those who lost everything in pursuit of freedom.
Whether you spend thirty seconds or several minutes in quiet reflection, taking time to pause is itself a meaningful act of remembrance.
Sometimes the most powerful tribute is simply to pause… and remember.
Gather Together
If possible, spend time with family and friends.
Share a meal. Tell stories. Look through old photographs. Speak about relatives who served, escaped, or helped build new lives abroad.
Traditions are passed from one generation to the next through conversations like these.
Thank a Veteran
If you know a veteran of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces, take a moment to thank them.
Their service, sacrifice, and example continue to inspire generations that followed.
Sometimes a simple expression of gratitude means more than we realize.
Teach Someone
Perhaps the most meaningful way to observe South Vietnamese Patriots’ Day is to help someone else learn about it.
Tell a friend why July 7 matters.
Share a story.
Recommend a book.
Post a photograph.
Write a reflection.
Every person who learns about South Vietnam helps ensure that its history continues to be remembered.
Keeping the Tradition Alive
South Vietnamese Patriots’ Day is still a young tradition.
Like every tradition, it will endure only if people choose to continue it.
You don’t need a parade or a grand ceremony to make a difference.
One prayer.
One flag.
One candle.
One story.
One conversation.
Sometimes that is enough.
