Hi everyone,
It’s hard to believe that nearly a year has passed since we celebrated the very first South Vietnamese Patriots’ Day.
Last year, many of us came together around a simple idea: if we want future generations to remember the courage, sacrifice, and ideals of South Vietnam, then remembrance cannot be left to chance. It must become a tradition.
This year, we’re excited to continue that tradition, and we invite you to join us once again on July 7.
Why July 7?
Last year, our team embraced an idea that had quietly circulated within our community for some time: that July 7, 1972, deserves recognition as one of the defining days in South Vietnamese history.
On that day, President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu arrived at the city of An Lộc following one of the Vietnam War’s most remarkable defensive victories.
For months, South Vietnamese soldiers had held their ground against a North Vietnamese force that outnumbered them by roughly three to one during the 1972 Spring Offensive. With American ground troops no longer fighting in Vietnam, South Vietnam’s armed forces demonstrated extraordinary courage, determination, and military skill under immense pressure.
The Battle of An Lộc became more than a military victory. It came to symbolize resilience, patriotism, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of a people determined to defend their homeland.
When President Thiệu visited the devastated city, he knelt before the surviving statue of Jesus Christ and offered a prayer for the soldiers who had fought and given everything for their country. For many, that moment remains one of the most powerful images of South Vietnam’s history.
It is that spirit we remember on South Vietnamese Patriots’ Day.
